Description:

The International Festival of Telecommunication Art was a collaborative program organized by Western Front that connected artists, universities, and art institutions around the world using slowscan, videophone, email, and fax transmissions. The program began on New Year's Eve 1990 and continued for over seventeen days, with many exchanges happening simultaneously.

Participants included Espace Donguy (Paris), Other Visions (San Francisco), 6 Degrees of Freedom (Sante Fe), Digital Art Exchange (Carnegie Mellon, Pittsburgh), Ponton Media (Hamburg), Electronic Café (Santa Monica), InterAccess (Toronto), artist Kō Nakajima (Tokyo) and ICA (Boston).

During the festival, a team of correspondents at Van Gogh TV, Hamburg joined Western Front organizers by videophone as they gradually made their way across participating cities, arriving in Vancouver in time for Art’s Birthday on January 17, 1991.

Curated by Hank Bull and Ken O'Heskin.

Video documentation is available upon request.
