Description:

Initiated by Hungarian filmmakers Gábor Bódy and Verushka Bódy, Infermental was an international videocassette magazine that published video works and trailers. The concept of a magazine on videotape was originally inspired by the experience of sending tapes through the mail to get past the Iron Curtain in order to facilitate communication about art.

Appearing annually with a total running time between four and six hours, each issue of Infermental was compiled and edited in a different city. The project involved ten issues, based in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany; Budapest, Hungary; Lyon, France; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Vancouver, Canada; Buffalo, US; Tokyo, Japan; Wien, Austria; and Osnabrück, Germany / Skopje, North Macedonia.

The sixth issue of Infermental was developed in Vancouver in 1987, and subtitled “The New World Edition.” Curated by Hank Bull, the issue styled itself as a videomap of the world and assembled six hours of contributions from seventy-nine artists across twenty-five countries.

Infermental VI featured videos by Nikita Alekseev, Michiko Amali, Volker Anding, Art d’Ameublement, Ute Aurand and Ulrike Pfeiffer, Babeth, Alfred Birnbaum, Byron Black, Skip Blumburg, Hans Peter Böffgen and Harry Reinen, Dirk de Bruyn, Yoanna Czerwinska, Sylvie and Chérif Defraoui, Margaret Dragu, Erotic Psyche, Theo Eshetu, Ken Feingold, Gábor Ferenczi and Can Togay, Fraser Finlayson, FRIGO, Anna Bella Geiger, John Goff, Frank Graff, Doug Hall, Al Hansen, Mona Hatoum, Barney Haynes, Edgar Heap of Birds, Astrid Heibach, Bertold Hering, Internews, Mao Kawaguchi, Shelagh Keeley, Dieter Kiessling, Rainer Kirberg, Taeko Kitajima, Tom Klinkowstein, Richard Kriesche, Amna and Sardono Kusomo, Ardele Lister, Chip Lord, Dalibor Martinis, Laurie McDonald, Dave McIntosh and TV Bob, Eric Metcalfe, Rafael Montanez Ortiz, Ed Mowbray, Kō Nakajima, Yvonne Oerlemans, Rotraut Pape, Gotot Prakosa, Dave Rimmer, M.
