Description:

Sonic Boom is an annual, multi-day new music festival organized by Vancouver Pro Musica that features new compositions by composers and performers based in British Columbia. The eight edition of the festival took place at Western Front, and featured electroacoustic and chamber compositions with instrumentation ranging from bagpipes, to mandolin, accordion, voice, and violin. 

The artists included Mark Armanini, Balzac, Marc Baril, Janet Berman, DB Boyko, Darren Copeland, Warren Copeland, Susan Frykberg, Daniel Ingram, Chris Kovarik, Grace Jong Eun Lee, Lindsay J. McDonald, Lowell Morris, Linda Nessel-Treen, Bruce Nielsen, Michael O’Neill, Randy Pelles, Sylvia Rickard, Doug Smith, Paul Steenhuisen, Phil Thompson, Rita Ueda, Vancouver Moving Theatre, and Derek Wong.

Pre-festival programming included Wymmn’s LEAP Day, an event organized by the Live Electroacoustic Arts Performance Society (LEAPS). This featured a roundtable discussion on women and electroacoustic music led by Andra McCartney, and a performance by Jan Berman, Susan Frykberg, Kathy Kennedy, Sue McGowan, Rita Ueda, and Hildegard Westerkamp.
