In the single-channel video Name the Speaker: Toast the City, Andrew James Paterson plays the host of a trivia-style game show in which local celebrity contestants are invited to “toast” Vancouver landmarks, either celebrating them or condemning them as architectural eyesores. Meanwhile, Eric Metcalfe and Margaret Dragu appear as anxious network executives who question the production and the host’s credibility. Borrowing elements from shows such as The Gong Show and The Larry Sanders Show, as well as the travelogue format, the work blurs the boundaries between academia and popular culture, and between performance and documentary.
The contestants were Dana Claxton, John O’Brian, Philip McCrum, Paul Wong, Carol Sawyer, Mark Handley, Keith Wallace, and Zainub Verjee.
