Carolee Schneemann was an American visual and experimental artist working across painting, performance, film, and video. Her work examined the body, sexuality, gender, and the relationship between individual and social experience. Engaging with improvisation and action painting, she developed what she described as kinetic theatre. In downtown New York, she collaborated with figures connected to Judson Dance Theatre and participated in interdisciplinary events, integrating film, movement, and staged action into her artistic practice.
