Description:

Including Her Limits documents a performative artist talk by Carolee Schneemann in the Grand Luxe Hall on January 29 1995.

For the lecture, Schneemann wore a curly red wig and curved bull horns. Seated on a bench draped in sumptuous fabric, she presented a sequence of slides spanning thirty years of her practice, from early landscape and figurative painting to kinetic sculptures and performance installations. Key works included Meat Joy (1964), Up to and Including Her Limits (1973–76), Interior Scroll (1975), Mortal Coils (1994–95), and Infinity Kisses (1981–87).

During the talk, Schneemann was also joined in conversation with Vancouver-based performance artist Judy Radul. Their topics of discussion included taboos of the feminine, the body as an extension of material, Paul Cézanne’s brushwork technique, and painting and performance as a Möbius relation.

The video concludes with documentation of Schneemann performing Vulva’s School (1995), a faux puppet show in which two puppies deconstruct sexual bias in French semiotics and psychoanalytic theory.

Including Her Limits was edited by Shawn Chappelle and produced by Eric Metcalfe.

Presented with support from the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery.

Video documentation is available upon request.
