Fear of Lying unfolded as a relentless, humorous, and disarming torrent of speech, structured around a feminist text delivered by Paulette Phillips as a continuous monologue. Phillips performed into a microphone, accompanied by an audio track, while an LED display board positioned behind her presented a secondary text that both mirrored and disrupted her speech.
The stage was set with three wooden lecterns. Phillips moved among them wearing cleated shoes that caught on chains and other metallic objects scattered across the floor.
Phillips was joined by performer Nadia Ross, who stood atop a separate lectern for the duration of the performance. Ross functioned as a silent contrast to Phillips’s uninterrupted speech, at times performing a striptease or whispering private exchanges that were inaudible to the audience.
