Joolz Live in Gangland

Oct 4 — 5, 1985
Field:

Performance, Reading

Location:

Gangland Studios

Description:

While in residence at Western Front, Joolz performed two nights of poetry readings at Gangland Studios—marking her North American debut. The themes of her work ranged from embarrassing disco scenes to the futility of war, stories of everyday life, violence, drugs, betrayal, sex, politics, fear, and love.

The stage included a number of gothic set pieces including a candelabra, a bottle of red wine, and a skull used in Joolz’s video production Homeland, arranged on a black podium.

Presented in partnership with Cutting Edge Productions.

Video documentation is available upon request.

Seen in black and white, Joolz performs behind a microphone in a stand, wearing a floor-length, black dress, with long blonde hair, holding a notebook in their hand. The stage is draped in black fabric, and a black veiled podium holds a candelabra, a skull and a wine bottle. A single white curtain crosses the background diagonally, while outlines of an audience can be seen in the foreground.
