Produced while in residence at Western Front, Shawna Dempsey and Lori Millan’s single-channel video Object/Subject of Desire examines the contradictory nature of wanting and being wanted. Filmed against a green screen, Dempsey is composited onto drifting backdrops, appearing to hover weightlessly while wearing a ballgown constructed from white paper. She delivers a monologue reflecting on the complexities of intimacy as it is affirmed and denied through normative cultural scripts and psychosexual dynamics—embracing both the humour and absurdity inherent in these tensions.
