A screening of the documentary The Invaders (2015) presented as part of Agile Futures: Approaching Improvisation, the eleventh annual International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation colloquium. Directed by Prichard Smith, The Invaders follows the generation of civil rights activists made up of college students, Vietnam veterans, musicians, and intellectuals that emerged in Memphis, United States in 1967 and uncovers their behind-the-scenes involvement with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the pivotal days leading up to his assassination.
Following the screening, Invaders member John B. Smith was joined by the film’s composer Arish Khan for a question and answer period.
Presented in collaboration with the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation at the University of British Columbia and Coastal Jazz & Blues Society; and with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Government of Canada, the British Columbia Arts Council, the Province of British Columbia, the City of Vancouver, and SOCAN Foundation.
