Description:
A panel presented as part of Agile Futures: Approaching Improvisation, the eleventh annual International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation colloquium. Approaches included twenty-minute presentations by Beau Stocker and Eunhye Jeong.
In his talk “Rhythm in improvised music composition and performance: Improvised music models of East African rhythm translations that structure drum set sound explorations,” Stocker shared his practice-based research into the intersections of drum improvisation with Afro-futurisms and experimental art forms.
Eunhye Jeong’s talk “Improvising to Create the Aged Now” explored identity, concepts of the self, and music as an embodied form of memory. She also discussed the influence of pansori and traditional Korean music on her practice. Jeong closed her presentation with an improvisation on piano and voice that worked with her composition The Sacrifice (2019).
Presented in collaboration with the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation at the University of British Columbia and Coastal Jazz & Blues Society; and with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Government of Canada, the British Columbia Arts Council, the Province of British Columbia, the City of Vancouver, and SOCAN Foundation.
