Description:
Paddi McGrath’s solo exhibition featured a series of paintings that explored the idea of the archetypal woman as constructed by film, art, fashion magazines, literature, and mythology: queenly, seductive, angelic, and demonic all at once. These archetypes were embodied by baldheaded nudes, whose gestures conveyed both power and vulnerability within the confines of the frame. Several poses drew on classical traditions, invoking a sense of art-historical continuity while simultaneously unsettling it.
Western Front is a non-profit artist-run centre in Vancouver.
