Big Ideas

Mar 27 — Apr 12, 1990
Field:

Exhibition

Location:

Western Front

Description:

Big Ideas was a solo exhibition by Melva Forsberg of handmade buttons with feminist, political, and labour slogans. The work explored the relationship between messaging and scale to ask questions such as: What is the effect on viewers when a button is enlarged to twenty-five-times its original size? Does the viewer become aware of how the button was made? What is the effect of blowing up a utilitarian, wearable object hanging on a gallery wall? What does this say about the relationship between popular culture and high art?

Presented with support from Canada Council.
