Description:

Half-document, half-fiction, Rober Racine’s single-channel video essay centres on pianist and broadcaster Glenn Gould as its subject. The work features sound clips from Gould’s CBC radio documentaries The Idea of North (1967), The Quiet of the Land (1983), and Richard Strauss: The Bourgeois-Hero (1979). These clips showcase Gould’s technique of “contrapuntal radio,” where he layers multiple voices to create a unique sonic landscape that blurs the line between conversation and music. Adopting this methodology, Racine plays piano in the Grand Luxe Hall over the noise of simultaneous television and radio broadcasts.

J’aurais dit Glenn Gould also features an audio interview between Racine and John Jessop, and original compositions by Racine.

Video documentation is available upon request.
