Description:

This was the third and final concert of the Remote Access series. Western Front invited Lee Hutzulak to perform Incident Command as a co-presentation at FUSE, a special performance event series presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Incident Command was an installation and performance. Within a darkened room, Hutzulak prepared ordinary sound equipment such as a synthesizer, mixer, FX pedals, microphones, and CDs with an assortment of objects on a black velvet surface strewn with mirrored diamonds. It was the deployment of the gear on the collected items—an electric pump, jar of water, frying pan strung with springs, disco ball, telephone bells—that spurred an unorthodox and inventive listening experience. From the whir and tick of the ad hoc devices, melodies emerged, thickened, and collapsed. Bright white shards of light poked and flashed randomly throughout the room while a video camera struggling to focus was projected on top of itself.
