Jimmie Durham was a sculptor, essayist and poet. He was active in the United States in the civil rights movements of African Americans and Native Americans and addressed political, cultural, oppressive, and violent forces that constructed contemporary discourses. Durham often combined found objects, natural materials, and text to expose Western-centric views and prejudices hidden in language, objects, and institutions.
